If a picture is really worth a thousand words then much can be said about Edinburgh, as captured on stills or on film. From its cultural beating heart to its wide, open parks, these, our favourite Edinburgh videos capture this relatively small capital’s juxtaposition of landscapes and purpose.
"Way Back Home" by Dave Sowerby
This colourful 7-minute journey showing pro-stunt cyclist Danny MacAskill ‘street’ riding from Edinburgh to Skye opens with gorgeous footage of Edinburgh. We love its beautiful perspective of the city as an entry point to the Islands.
"Kinetic Edinburgh" by Walid Salhab
This atmosphereic timelapse film showcasesEdinburgh as a bustling metropolis; we really like how the film’s frenetic pace suggests a modern, bustling city full of life. Look out for outdoor arts installation Speed of Light from 2012’s Edinburgh International Festival.
"New Year in Edinburgh" by Leonardo Medeiros
Medeiros’ footage nicely captures the sheer scale of events as over 30,000 locals and visitors annually take to the street to create a ‘river of fire’ in the Torchlight Procession before the main event of the fireworks under the backdrop of Edinburgh Castle on Hogmanay.
"Edinburgh Fringe Festival: Scotland" by Erik Hudson
We love this fun snapshot of the ‘Greatest Show on Earth’ as the world's biggest arts festival rolls into town. 2012 welcomed 2,695 shows to 279 venues across the city, and we particularly like how Hudson’s video captures the acts trying to sell their show on the Royal Mile.
"Timelapse: Edinburgh" by Mark J Smith
This timelapse video made up entirely of still photographs goes beyond Edinburgh’s more famous attractions to showcase its often unsung wide open spaces, from Calton Hill’s Athenian acropolis to Arthur’s Seat, the Salisbury Crags and St Andrews Square.
