In celebration of our joint venture with Delta, we took over the New York Stock Exchange to showcase the two brands and benefits of the joint venture to New York travellers.
With a giant "Great Minds Fly Alike" banner on the facade of the historic building, the day kicked off with the opening of a Delta and Virgin Atlantic co-branded experiential space in front of the Exchange.
Guests had the opportunity to visit four individual experience zones:
- The Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse for a shoe shine, quick haircut or even a game of pool
- The Upper Class bar where they could meet fascinating people including David MacKay (an ex-Virgin Atlantic pilot who will be the first commercial space pilot with Virgin Galactic) and Danny Lopez, the British Consul General, New York
- The Delta onboard product where they could explore the airline’s high-end products such as Tumi amenity kits, Westin Heavenly In-flight bedding and chef-designed meals from Delta’s BusinessElite meal service
- Delta Sky Club – represented by a replica of Delta’s Sky Deck, a great outdoor space at their JFK T4 lounge
The central part of the activity brought the two airlines together with an “Innovation Lab.” The new Upper Class Wing Google Glass demo was on display for guests to learn about the trial and experience the Glass themselves. Delta pilots also explained the benefits of their new electronic flight bags using Microsoft Surface tablets, while flight attendants demonstrated Delta’s smartphone and iPad apps.
At 4pm, the big moment arrived when three VA Cabin Crew and Senior First Officer, Adelle Roberts, together with the Delta team rang the day's closing bell at the New York Stock Exchange. Delta Chairman Ed Bastian and CEO of Virgin Atlantic Craig Kreeger were there to watch the event from the trading floor and over 120 million people watched on TV. The night concluded with a great celebratory party on the Trading Floor with Virgin Atlantic customers and partners to celebrate the launch of the joint venture.
“It was incredible honor to be asked to represent Virgin Atlantic at the NYSE," said Adelle Roberts, Senior First Officer who had the honour of ringing the bell. "It was an amazing experience and something few people will get the opportunity to do in their lifetime. My role on the day was to host a networking session at the Upper Class bar set up outside the NYSE. I then had the honour of closing the US market by ringing the NYSE bell. It was great to meet the Delta team, and hear how they talk about us as if we are all one family.”
Delta created a short video of the event which can be viewed here.
