New Routes Virgin Atlantic Announces New Route to Cancun

by Moderator June 2011 - last edited February 2013 by Community Manager

Last week in Miami we announced the launch of our 33rd destination with the introduction of flights between London and Cancun, Mexico. The twice weekly service will begin on the 12th June 2012, and we're looking forward to welcoming up to 94,000 Virgin Atlantic customers travelling between London and Cancun in the first year. The new route strengthens our leisure network from London Gatwick, which already features nine leading long haul destinations in the Caribbean and the United States.

Get inspired...

Well, needless to say we're all veryexcited about this brand new route. Aside from being a major holiday destination in its own right, Cancun is the gateway to the fascinating state of Quintana Roo (famous for its ancient Mayan ruins and the diving hotspots of Cozumel and Isla Mujeres) not to mention the entire Yucatán Peninsula, one of the most fascinating and beautiful regions of Mexico.

The route will go on sale mid-July and is already available for those booking a tailor-made trip through Virgin Holidays, so if this year's summer holiday is already in the bag, here's some inspiration for next year...

Playa Del Carmen

South of Cancun, trendy Playa Del Carmen is the third largest city in Quintana Roo after Cancun and Chetumal, and is the jumping off point for ferries to Cozumel.

Tulum

With an ancient Mayan ruin right on the clifftop, Tulum has one of the world's most spectacular - and most photographed - coastlines.

Cozumel

Seventy kilometres south of Cancun, and made world-famous by Jacques Cousteau, the island of Cozumel is one of the world's top diving destinations.

Isla Mujeres

Laid back Isla Mujeres (Island of Women) is just a half hour's boat ride from Cancun but a world away in pace of life. Beautiful beaches and a relaxed, colourful streetlife is about the sum of it.

Chichen Itza

Of all the Yucatán Maya sites, Chichen Itza is the most well-known. A UNESCO world heritage site, it was recently named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World after a worldwide vote.

Cobá

More ruins are to be found at Cobá but these are for the slightly more adventurous as they're situated deep in the jungle. Climb to the top of Multi Nohoch for a fantastic aerial view of the surroundings.

Río Secreto

Río Secreto is a remarkable underground river system with thousands of enormous stalactites and stalagmites. Hike and swim in total silence through a 600 metre route.

Merida

Capital city of the state of Yucatán, busy Merida is a tropical, pastel-painted colonial city and is home to the oldest cathedral on the continent.

That's great news! We flew with VA and decided a cheeky stop over in Vegas was in order as Virgin didn't go direct to Cancun. On the way out we went via Miami. Hopefully the Premium Economy refits have now been done on the Virgin fleet at LGW!

Fantastic news, i have visited Cancun twice in the last 2 years and decided i would not return due to the restriction on travel companies from the UK. I will definitely return now i can fly VA Premium Economy, it would be even better if they could link up Hotel deals as well like partner with the Royal Inn or Le Blanc.

We have been going to Cancun for the past four years and this November will be our fifth time, how we wish that Virgin would fly from Manchester to this destination.

The hotel we always stay at is the "Excellence Riviera" at Pueroto Maya and to say the service and facilities are outstanding is a understatment (check out Trip Advisor and see the comments).I do wish this hotel could be added to Virgins destinations because it certainley is up to your standards. Plus we would love to travel with you.

Its great news. Just visited with BA. Destination was great - flight wasn't. Mexico City would be another needed Destination in the list of VA hotspots.
