vtravelled Weekly Round-Up w/c 13th June

Swings, rooftop bars, paragliders, maps; this week our web round-up take us up high for an aerial view of travel...

New York Up Top

There's no point visiting a great city without seeing it from up high and while tourist-friendly observation decks offer great views, you can't visit those with a drink in your hand. For a proper, relaxed evening's look at the bright lights you'll need a rooftop bar, so here's a round-up of five of the best Year-Round spots from Frommer's. Cheers!

LA Swings

No, not like that…as in playground swings. Funded by a grant from The Awesome Foundation ("a worldwide network of people devoted to forwarding the interest of awesomeness in the universe.") Jeffrey Waldman and his friends have installed swings all over the city. Go on, give us a push.

Shop Shanghai

Shanghai may be world renowned for its (admittedly high quality) fake goods markets, but there's so much more to shopping there. Authentic and unique clothes and accessories also abound in the city and this guide to the top 10 boutiques is a great starter for visitors.

Map Style

Stylish maps are always hard to find, especially in the era of the smart phone, but The Future Mapping Co. really make these most practical of documents come alive with colour and artistic flair. All their wares are available online, but if you're visiting London, browse in person at their new shop, open on Sundays amidst the beautiful Columbia Road flower market.

Over Africa

We always love to highlight striking or unusual photography and films of far-off destinations, but this one is really special. Brought to our attention by Richard Trillo, Africa expert and author of our Kenya Beaches guide, this film documents photographer George Steinmetz's project of capturing a continent's variety from a motorised paraglider.
