When it comes to a room with a view, there are plenty of Hong Kong hotels that deliver, but we can’t get enough of The Harbour Grand. Waking up to the magnificent views of the soaring skyscrapers along Victoria Harbour (did you know there are twice as many here as in New York?) or falling asleep to the city’s twinkling lights really gives us the Hong Kong atmosphere.
One of the most quintessential Hong Kong experiences, not to mention the most delicious one, is to try traditional yum cha, also known as dim sum. Though there are lots of great dim sum places in Hong Kong, one of our favourites is Yu Man Fang in Happy Valley. Embellished with old-fashioned Chinese décor, the dishes at this charming little restaurant are all winners. We absolutely love the baked roasted duck char siu bao.
A lot of people say that Hong Kong is a shopper’s paradise, and for us, one of the most atmospheric places to shop is the Hong Kong Ladies Market on Tong Choi Street. It’s an open-air street market where you can find great bargains in whatever you’re looking for, whether clothing, shoes or souvenirs – it’s more than likely you’ll fall in love with something unexpected here whatever you’re searching for initially. Haggling is a must when you’re shopping here – we always try to bargain 20% to 40% lower than the original price.
There are a few bars in Hong Kong that serve the most magical cocktails – but none so potent, yet still heavenly, as the Club Feather Boa’s daiquiris and fruit martinis. It’s really hard to find if you’re a first-timer since there’s no signage outside and the curtains are always closed, but once you get there it’s well worth the effort and you can reward yourself with one of those cocktails and celebrate the fact that you now belong to this fashionable crowd who are “in the know”.
Remember, if you’re visiting Hong Kong for three days or more, make sure to use an Octopus Card, which is accepted on almost all forms of public transport, as well as in convenience stores.
