We always get excited about touching down in the UK’s Second City, and there’s no better way in our opinion to get a feel for its spirit than by checking into the Malmaison Manchester. Not only is it just a stone’s throw away from the retail paradises of King Street and St Ann’s Square, but also its rooms are just oozing with stylish comfort. We love sampling the classic and quirky cocktails at the Ember Lounge before heading out of this oasis of calm into the big city. It’s no wonder this is the place where celebs and music mogals choose to spend their nights. If you’re ever feeling flush, we can highly recommend the Moulin Rouge suite – but beware, its bath takes about 30 minutes to fill it’s so big!

For one of the most picturesque suppers in the city, we always head to The River Bar and Restaurant at The Lowry Hotel. Overlooking the waters of the River Irwell, this beautifully designed bar and restaurant is perfect for watching the sun go down with a glass of champagne before tucking in to their ever-changing menu. It was actually shortlisted as one of the best places to “seal the deal” by Esquire, so it’s also a great place to come if you’re in Manchester for business. We also love their light lunch menu – it’s got a fabulous selection of seafood.

Manchester is known as a party city, with bars still packed until the early hours, and when we’re looking for a night filled with dancing, to-die-for cocktails and a fun-loving crowd, we can’t keep ourselves away from The Liar’s Club. Not only is it Manchester’s only Tiki dive bar and Caribbean Rum Shop, but it’s open until 4am. The music is loud, the drinks are pure theatre (we dare you to get a sharing cocktail) and the décor is incredibly over the top – we love it!

We can never leave Manchester without visiting the work of one of its most famous artists, L.S.Lowry. Home to the world’s largest public collection of the artist’s works (including oil paintings, drawings, pastels and watercolours), The Lowry has a selection permanently on display in the Galleries which are truly a wonder to behold. Manchester street scenes feature heavily in his work, and we think this is one of the best ways of appreciating the city through the eyes of another.
