The Top Ten Business Breakfasts in Columbus

by Claudia January - last edited October

If you’re heading to Columbus for business, you may want to schedule your meetings over breakfast. The city’s restaurants take the first meal of the day seriously with scrumptious offerings like freshly-made croissants and homemade preserves and banana-topped ricotta pancakes. Here are our top ten places to enjoy a business breakfast in town.

Many of Columbus’ most powerful people frequent this downtown café, including Columbus’ mayor. Scones and muffins are baked every morning with strawberries, raspberries and other seasonal fruits at Cafe Brioso. Owner Jeff Davis roasts coffee beans daily, along with blending spices for chai.

Cup o’ Joe

With seven locations, Cup o’ Joe is the go-to place for coffee lovers. They roast beans daily, using varieties from Kenya, Sumatra and Costa Rica. Stop in the German Village or Short North Arts District locations, and you’ll be among many holding their meeting over a cup of espresso.

Dempsey’s

Columbus lawyers make up most of the crowd at Dempsey’s, set across from the Franklin County Courthouse. It’s not just convenience that makes it popular. The menu offers creative options like granola-encrusted French toast and croissants stuffed with eggs, bacon and cheese.

Gallerie Bar & Bistro

The Hilton snagged one of the city’s top chefs, Bill Glover, when it opened in 2012 across from the Greater Columbus Convention Center. He’s created a menu that makes the restaurant a destination in itself. Lemon griddle cakes and eggs Benedict with duck confit are among the breakfast choices at the Gallerie Bar & Bistro.

Best Breakfast and Sandwiches

Don’t let the strip mall location scare you away. This diner in the north-western suburb of Westerville lives up to its name. The omelettes are so big they can serve two, but save room for the homemade bread. It’s easy to see why this café was featured on PBS’s documentary “Breakfast Special.”

Latitude 41

It may be located inside the downtown Renaissance hotel, but this is no ordinary hotel restaurant. The kitchen at Latitude 41 is committed to using locally sourced ingredients. Who’s counting calories this early? Indulge with the rum raisin rice pudding with mascarpone and local honey.

Northstar Café

Fair warning: come hungry if you have a breakfast meeting at one of the city’s three Northstar Cafe locations. You’ll want to eat every bite of the Cloud 9 pancakes, made fluffy with ricotta cheese and topped with bananas.

Pistacia Vera

Enjoy ratatouille quiche or smoked salmon tartare while watching the German Village bakery fill with just-made macaroons, croissants, signature chocolate chunk pistachio cookies and other delectables. The homemade preserves at Pistacia Vera are so good they sell them by the jar.

Tasi Café

Even some residents don’t know about Tasi Cafe, hidden on a back alley in the Short North Arts District, but those who do swear by the freshly-baked breads, huevos rancheros and potato latkes.

Tommy’s Diner

Nobody’s a stranger at this local diner, located west of downtown in Franklinton. Owner Tommy Pappas may just be the friendliest man in Columbus, welcoming business leaders and neighbourhood patrons with the same enthusiasm. The breakfast at Tommy’s Diner is so good, they serve it all day.
