Former Editor in Chief of luxury NYC magazine UPTOWN and now at the helm of BRIDES Magazine, Keija Minor, talks about where to find the locals’ NYC and how Grand Central Station is more than just a terminal for her…
What’s a sure-fire shopping spot in the city?
When I’m in a panic because it’s the day of an event and I have nothing to wear, I head straight to Bergdorf Goodman for the perfect cocktail dress.
Favorite place to grab a bite without a reservation?
I’ll always love The Odeon on West Broadway in Tribeca. Described as a French American bistro, it’s a New York staple (been around since the 80s), and the vibe is chic but relaxed. Plus, the food is great and everyone can find something on the menu. Many order steak but I’m a sucker for the B.L.T.
What would be involved for a special night on the town?
My perfect evening would start with watching a performance by Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater or American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center, followed by dinner at an old school Italian restaurant like Il Mulino or one of the newer favourites like Waverly Inn (+1 917 828 1154) or The Lion. And if I still had room and energy, I’d go on to Billy’s Bakery for a cupcake, and then back to a suite at Smyth Tribeca or the Surrey Hotel.
Is there a place in the city that inspires you?
Grand Central Station. Stand in Grand Central Terminal (on the side, out of the way, so you don’t get run over) and watch New Yorkers rush in every direction, narrowly missing each other but never… OK, rarely… colliding. It’s the greatest un-choreographed dance. I get a rush from the energy of all my fellow New Yorkers rushing to get on with their lives.
What destination should every NYC visitor be sure to hit?
You have to visit the Museum of Modern Art. It’s par for the course. But to really experience New York City, see what’s going on at the Fashion Institute of Technology, the Public Theater, and Studio Museum in Harlem. You will often stumble upon a production or exhibit that embodies the locals’ NYC, not the tourists’ New York.
