Insider Interview Miami: Jorge Moreno

Latin Grammy award-winning musician, Jorge Moreno, chats to us about his love of Miami, his neighbourhood and the three ‘B’s that make this city such a great place to visit and live in.

What kind of effect has living in Miami had on the songs you write and perform?

I was seduced early in my career to move to Los Angeles but I broke the spell. Miami is my home; I was born and raised here. It's a member of my family. It influences my music the same way the pastelitos (Cuban pastries) influence my stomach - deliciously.

What area do you live in? What makes it special? What is your favourite area of Miami?

I live in Miami Springs, a sleepy little Americana-style town in the heart of the hustle and bustle of Miami. It’s family-friendly and an easy 10 minutes from everything. One of my favourite areas is Miami Beach - my hangout there is The Catalina Beach Club . It’s got a great roof terrace on the hotel and some really nice restaurants too (Maxine’s Bistro, Kung Fu Kitchen and Sushi and Red Bar).

What are some of your favourite ways to pass the time in the city?

By hanging out (and eating) with my family and friends. There’s great food in Miami, and South Florida in general. Everyone thinks it's all about Cuban food but we have great everything. Taco Beach Shack, for example, has some of the best Mexican in the nation – Taco Tuesdays (2-for-1 Tacos) are the best days…!

Who are some of your musical (and non-musical) influences?

It’s a question I get asked often. There really are too many to name, but a few are - Beny More, The Beatles, Floyd, Los Zafiros, ELO, Beck and, of course, Celia (Cruz). A big non-musical influence for me is Leonardo Di Vinci.

Why do you think the city holds such appeal for visitors?

There are three big reasons: beaches, babes and the beauty of the city (both natural and cultural).
