Indhra Chagoury and Jeremy Somers are behind the Australian swimsuit label We Are Handsome, creating handmade, beautiful pieces sewn and designed exclusively Down Under.
There are plenty of swimwear labels out there - why do you think Australian labels seem to do so well?
It must be something in the air, but more likely it’s because of our lifestyle. Australians also travel more than any nation, which means we're inspired by more and have become the most adept and innovative in this field. For us, it’s about loving the beautiful things in life, and staying true to our roots.
What are your favourite beaches in Sydney?
Bondi, Bronte and Tamarama are not only our locals, but our faves as well. The Bronte Beach is famous for its 30-metre ocean pool, but they are all full of everything you need from a beach in Sydney: surfers, sunbathers and the most stunning white sand and blue sea. They are also the best places to people (and swimsuit) watch.
Are there any Sydney inspirations in your designs?
Sydney inspires the beauty in the brand and the ethos behind it: colour, life, fun. All the suits have colourful palettes and finely shaped cuts which remind us of the halcyon, sun-drenched days of old – and why not have the most beautiful animals on your swimsuit? It’s fun!
Where do you chill out on weekends?
In Sydney we are spoilt for choice, but weekends down at North Bondi Italian Food on the deck is the place to be. It has the most spectacular views of Bondi Beach (you can even check what the surf looks like on their web-based “Beach-Cam” before you go!) and on Saturdays and Sundays they get live bands and local DJs in so you can easily make a night of it!
Where do you like to go out in Sydney?
Anywhere with a rooftop! The Commons (Darlinghurst) for dinner or drinks after work, and for a great glass of wine The Passage or The Winery are a couple of our favourite haunts - they can really talk wine. The Passage Is particularly good for it’s Day of the Week Deals – we like Gin Club on Thursday nights…
