Jivi Sethi is known worldwide as a designer and one of India’s best-dressed men. He sits down with us to talk about fashion in Delhi, the places that inspire him and his ultimate fashion “no-no”.
Describe your style and tell us a little bit about where you like to shop?
My style is individual and non-conformist. I am always seeking a fresh interpretation of classical clothing with a distinctly global Indian identity. I like to shop in the Rajesh Pratap Singh Store in Lodhi Colony (which has truly stand-apart artisanal garments) or to go hunting for jewels and antiques in Sunder Nagar Market – it specialises in Indian and Nepali handicrafts and you can often discover treasures amongst the replicas…
What kind of men’s clothes would you never wear? What is your fashion faux-pas?
Any clothes that display brand names, in any form.
You design furniture, jewellery, events, perfumes and lotions – which of your projects has given you the most fulfilment?
Each and every one, I wish never to compromise, and I endeavour to challenge myself constantly.
Which fashion designers have been important influences for you?
More than designers, traditional clothing throughout the history of the world, has been my greatest inspiration. I often meet Manish Arora, a close friend, for a quick lunch at Flavours in Defence Colony, which is decorated by him. The outside seating is great for a relaxed meal and a catch up.
Are there any particular places in Delhi that you go to for inspiration or ideas?
Delhi is an ancient layered city, the capital of a large and dynamic country that’s moving forward at a fast pace. Everything from the profound to the profane is a source of constant wonderment. To take time out and to think, I like to go to the Diva Cafe at the Italian Cultural Centre, this is a frequent haunt of mine, or I head to the Oberoi for dinner at Taipan, or Orient Express at the Taj Palace – all of which are a pleasure.
