Meet Joan Heeter, Swingers Golf League Legend

If you’re new to Flying Club, you may not have heard about the hottest competition ever to grace the golf course. A league so exclusive, even Tiger Woods himself can’t join…unless of course, he’s waving his Red, Silver or Gold membership card.

Ladies and gentlemen, we’re talking about Swingers, Virgin Atlantic’s unique golf league exclusively for Flying Club members and we’d like to introduce you to Swingers legend, Joan Heeter. Captain of the ‘Rest of the World’ team in season seven and previous finalist in seasons five and six, Joan has a handicap of six and is a force to be reckoned with on the course.

Joan, tell us how long you've been playing golf and why you're such a fan of the sport.

I started playing golf the year I retired in the summer of 2001. I have always been interested in sport but golf is special. It is the toughest and most frustrating sport I have ever participated in but also the most fun. The highs are high and the lows make you cry but the social part of the game is fantastic and I’ve been fortunate enough to meet some wonderful people from all over the world.

What made you sign up for Swingers?

I first flew with Virgin Atlantic in the summer of 2007, following a recommendation from a friend here in the UK who told me what a great airline it is to fly with. So when I received an email inviting me to join Swingers, I didn’t even have to think about it.

Tell us about your favourite moment from the Swingers leagues?

My favourite moment has to be making it to the final in the USA vs. Europe league in 2008. A close second was being asked to serve as Captain for the Rest of the World team when we competed here in the UK and it was even more special to be on the winning team!  I have participated and been a finalist for the past 3 years and hopefully, I will win my fourth spot to play on the ROW team this November in Florida.

What do you most want to get out of being part of Swingers?

I’m really hoping to qualify for a final spot but more than anything, I am having a wonderful time meeting new people and participating in life in England. I love it.

When you’re not tee-ing off on the golf course, how have you been spending your time in the UK?

I’ve been in the UK just a week, but in that short time, I've toured the 2012 London Olympic site, taken part in a quiz which raised money for Water Aid and also a charity golf fundraiser at The Essex.
