A Look Inside Our Brand New Airbus A330

by Moderator April 2011 - last edited February 2013

After an incredible amount of preparation, testing and hard work behind the scenes, our brand new A330 Beauty Queen made her inaugural flight from Manchester to Orlando on Saturday 2nd April.

Our Competition Winner

You may remember that we recently ran a competition for a lucky planespotter to win an exclusive behind-the-scenes tour of the new A330 as she underwent her final tests and checks in the hangar at London's Gatwick Airport.

Last week, we were delighted to welcome our winner Robert Thomson down from Northampton for his VIP access-all-areas onboard tour. Robert and his family are frequent flyers who've travelled to Orlando with us on a number of occasions, so he was very keen to experience how his next flight might be.

After the tour, Robert had this to say about Beauty Queen: "What a plane! The level of comfort and spec are fantastic and as for the inflight entertainment, who needs an iPad...".

Today we're we're thrilled to share some photos of the day, inside and out...

Flightdeck

The Airbus A330 is the most fuel efficient aircraft in its class today and this investment underlines our commitment to flying a lower carbon fleet. Our inaugural flight was piloted by Captain Chris Hall who said "This is an exciting day for me personally and for all our pilots. Our first twin engined aircraft is a delight to fly."

Just flown from New York on this aircraft in upper class-was NOT impressed-seats are small and narrow compared to the 747 and the divider between seats was useless as I had to watch my adjacent passengers film as I was trying to sleep. So much so I will not fly Virgin again.I have filled in a complaint form for Virgin to read.

I am set to travel on Virgin Airbus 330-300 from Manchester to Orlando in January 2013. The flight numbers as VS75 and VS76. As a nervous flyer I've been trying to find which aircraft I will be flying on to find some more information about its background and safety etc.

Looking at Virgin's fleet information, it appears only G-VSXY (or Beauty Queen) is the only Virgin A330-300 with "VS" in its registration, so I a presuming this will be the aircraft I'll be travelling on?

I have been trying to discover how old this aircraft is. I understand it came into Virgins service early in 2011, however was this straight off the production line? Or was it in service for another airline before this? As I know it's only hired from AerCap?

Thanks for the help.

Hi Rob,

You've nothing to worry about. They're all modern aircraft and are extremely reliable and safe; truthfully, it doesn't matter so much about the age of the aircraft but rather who's operating it and how they maintain them. Virgin's maintenance is extremely good.

There's 8 A330-300's in VS's fleet, however only 2 (I think) operate in the MAN and LGW fleets. You can find more info, ask more questions on v-flyer.com.

Sit back, relax and enjoy the flight on what is an efficient, quiet and comfortable aircraft!

Cheerio,

Simon

Really Karl? So Virgin aren't allowed to adapt to the changing dynamics of aviation and the cost of fuel because of an ad campaign years ago when fuel was vastly vastly cheaper? No business runs like that.

Plus, Upper Class remains one of the best in the business!

Yawn.

The seats for the extra legroom are in pairs starting at row 52 through to row 58 both sides of the plane and are very good seats well worth the extra money.

Hi we are due to fly out in October and I think at the moment it is scheduled to be an A330. There are only 3 of us so would like a row of 3 near the back, my question is, does the first row of 3 sit off centre so the IFE screens are in front of you, or are the seats centred so you have to look at an angle at the screen?
