Virgin Atlantic Introduces New Improved TravelChair

by Moderator October 2012 - last edited March 2013

Virgin Atlantic is the first airline to purchase the new, improved TravelChair from the children’s charity MERU.

The new TravelChair which will be delivered later this month has been specially designed to provide postural support for disabled children during air travel. It can accommodate children between the ages of 3 – 11 years (depending on height and weight) and offers firm, postural support for a wide range of disabilities.

We've been using an earlier version of the TravelChair for many years with fantastic feedback from cabin crew and parents. Parents simply advise us of their need to use the TravelChair when making the booking to ensure it is on board for both outbound and inbound flights – all at no extra charge.

Our Passenger Accessibility Adviser, Geraldine Lundy, is delighted that we've placed this order for the new TravelChair with MERU.

“We’ve used the previous version of the TravelChair for many years to fly hundreds of children with disabilities around the world," she said. "We're really pleased to know that we will enable many more children with disabilities to travel safely and comfortably to wherever we fly."

“It's a pleasure to work with MERU and the CAA to ensure these children and their families enjoy what so many people take for granted.”

The new improved TravelChair is lighter (now weighing approximately 6kg) and folds in half to fit into an overhead locker when not in use. It has various adjustable features to ensure that disabled children are supported and comfortable, even on long haul flights.

MERU design and manufacture life changing equipment for disabled children and young people, and are there to help when no ready-made solution exists to meet a child’s needs. Visit their website for more information on the features and benefits of the TravelChair.

Passengers wishing to book a flight with Virgin Atlantic can either log onto www.virginatlantic.com or call 0844 20 92 770 to make a reservation.
