Virgin Atlantic Flying Club: All You Need To Know

The first rule of Flying Club is we DO talk about Flying Club and we’d like to share with you just how easy it is to start earning and spending miles. But first, let’s just take a step back and explain a bit about how it all works.

Flying Club is the Virgin Atlantic loyalty programme, lovingly designed to help you reach amazing rewards quickly so you’ll want to fly with us again, sooner. It’s totally free and anyone can sign up - regardless of whether you’ve flown with Virgin previously or not - and you don’t just earn miles when you fly, you also earn them going about every day activities like using your credit card.

The second rule of Flying Club is you will belong to one of our three tiers, and Flying Club Red is where it all begins...

Red Means Go

As soon as you sign up, you can start to earn miles on the ground when you shop with our extensive global network of partners, which includes everyone from Currys and House of Fraser to Office and Purple Parking, where you’ll also be entitled to a 5% discount. You’ll also earn miles in the air every time you fly with us or one of our 17 partner airlines.

Then when you’re ready to rest make sure you do so at one of our partner hotel groups like Marriott or Hilton so you can count sheep, while we count your miles. And if you’re a saver rather than a spender, remember that miles don’t expire, provided you take at least one earning or spending activity every three years.

Some other perks of being a Red member include being among the first to hear about the latest sales fares as soon as they go live, the ability to manage your account online and a 5% discount with Virgin Holidays, stretching to 10% when you pay with a Virgin Atlantic American Express card from MBNA. Don’t restrict yourself to holidays though, as our card can be used to earn miles anywhere, whether you’re filling up the car, or doing the weekly shop.

As well as miles, you will also earn tier points and if you earn 15 in a year, you’ll zoom straight from Red to Silver level, which means more miles and more benefits.

So what are tier points? You'll earn these in addition to miles when you fly with Virgin Atlantic or one of our Flying Club airline partners. These allow you to move up a tier once you reach a certain level. To put this into context, if you fly return from London to New York, as a Flying Club member, you’ll earn a total of 4 tier points in economy, 6 in premium economy and 10 in upper class. For the same flight, you’ll also earn 3458 miles in economy, which you can save and spend as you see fit.

Silver Service

Once you’ve taken the next step in your Flying Club journey, things start to get really interesting. As a Silver member, in addition to all the benefits offered in Red, you can also enjoy 50% extra miles every time you fly with us, so you’ll reach exciting rewards faster.

Whichever class you're booked in, if you're travelling from London Heathrow you'll also have full use of our Premium Economy check in, which means less queuing and more relaxing. And if the flight you want to book is full, we’ll bump you up in the queue so that if anyone fails to show up, you’ll be one of the first people we offer a seat to.

Finally, if you would rather leave the car at home, you can take advantage of two complimentary first-class upgrades for both the Heathrow & Gatwick Express.

To keep your silver status, you’ll need to earn at least 10 tier points in your membership year, but if you earn 40, you’ll find yourself sitting pretty in our top tier, Gold.

You’ve Struck Gold

Gold is as good as Flying Club gets and considering how we like to spoil you, prepare to be indulged. You’ll receive all of what Red and Silver have to offer and more and to ensure you make the most of this elevated position, carry your Gold card with you at all times.

Fast track through Virgin Atlantic security

As a Gold member you’ll automatically earn 100% more miles, so whether you’re on a business trip or holiday, every flight is an extra rewarding experience. When it comes to arriving at the airport, you can take advantage of our Upper Class check in, with priority boarding and fast track through immigration and security for you and a guest. And if you’re somebody who always seems to need just a few more bits and pieces, Gold membership will get you one extra item of baggage at 23kg irrespective of the class you’re travelling in.

To make the most of your airport experience, you and a guest will also be able to access our fantastic Clubhouse, where you can slip into total relaxation mode with a massage in the spa, work in peace in the library, or just grab some refreshments before the flight ahead.

On arrival at London Heathrow, you can visit our Revivals Lounge to freshen up with a shower or a visit to the Cowshed Spa, have your clothes pressed by our housekeeping service and then sample a fully cooked breakfast, made to order.

Finally, we want you to spread the love, so we’ll also give you an additional Silver membership for someone aged 18 or over, sharing your home address, which also allows you to spend miles from their account and reach rewards quicker.

This is just our pick of the best benefits each tier has to offer - to find out the full perks, just visit The Little Red Book.

Friends with benefits

The third rule of Flying Club is, don't forget to tell everyone you know about it and you could be racking up those miles in no time at all. Every time a friend, family member or colleague signs up to Flying Club and flies with us, you’ll both earn bonus miles.

With our global array of hotel partners including everyone from Malmaison to Holiday Inn you’ll be able to find something to suit your needs, whatever your budget.

Whether you’re renting a car, booking a holiday or shopping online, there’s never been an easier way to earn miles while you go about your every day activities.

Spend, spend, spend

The fourth and final rule of Flying Club is easy - every so often you should treat yourself and spend some of what you earn. To get a feel for where your miles could take you, have a look at our latest Reward Seat Sale, where a return flight from London to New York can be snapped up for just 29,500 miles.

Alternatively, if those miles are burning a hole in your pocket faster than you can say ‘What’s my balance?’ then why not take to the sky in a Virgin hot air balloon over the English countryside for just 30,000 miles per person? You can also put your miles towards Virgin Vouchers which make a fab gift and can be spent on any anything from great days out at UK attractions to wine, hampers and spa days - nothing like a bit of self-indulgence.

I want in!

Signing up for Flying Club is free and really easy to do. Just visit our website, fill in a few details and you'll be on your way in no time.

I have just purchased 5 business class flights. Can they all be applied to my flying club card or does each passenger need to be a member and claim them individually. As I have paid for them I would rather see them all going on my card such that I get the benefit of the enhanced miles from silver and gold

Hi Ross,

You can only have Flying Club miles assigned to your account for flights you have personally flown. If there are other passengers on a booking you have made, they will need to join Flying Club and claim miles for the flights they have taken.

Thanks, Maxine

Hi,

I'm a gold card memeber. In July I'm flying from Heathrow to Vancouver with my husband and two children. I know I can sign him in free, but what about my children? (14 & 12 years old). Thanks in advance.
