Our Experience

New Recording Studio at Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse

by Moderator May 2012 - last edited February 2013 by Community Manager

We've installed a professional grade recording studio in our Clubhouse at London Heathrow because so many top class musicians and creative professionals fly with Virgin Atlantic. From now on, composers who think of a new tune or need a last minute radio edit to their latest single whilst waiting for their flight can rush to the studio and record it immediately, rather than running the risk of forgetting it.

The Virgin Atlantic Avid Suite is compact but powerful, offering the industry standard professional digital and editing and mixing system Pro Tools. The finished content can be emailed or uploaded to the record company, broadcaster or producer direct from the Clubhouse.

The Edit Suite has been custom designed and built exclusively for the Clubhouse by Guy Wilson of AKA Design in London, arguably the world's leading designer of creative spaces, in particular music and TV studios.

Charles Vine, from our Brand Alliances team, explains how the idea evolved.

'We met with Avid more than 2 years ago with the aim of trying to find a natural way to work together, since many of our passengers would be within their target market. The technology was larger than it is today and so the notion of putting an edit suite into the Clubhouse wasn't feasible at that time. But we stayed in touch and around 18 months ago, we started to explore how this may become possible.'

'We met in the Clubhouse, took stock of all the design styles and references - wood, tones, discreet branding (the suite is a shell style design reminiscent of the Upper Class suite) and Avid engaged AKA Design to come up with an ergonomic, custom-built mini suite. The technology is now small enough to make it happen.'

Bands strike right note as they take to the skies

As an airline we want to do all that we can to help every musician’s career take off and to celebrate the launch of the edit suite, we're excited to announce that the very first single to be edited in the Clubhouse has been released this week.

Cloud are Angus, Ben, Claud, Chris and Harpal and together create a heady fusion of bluesy pop and rock. With a name like Cloud, this band had to be the natural choice to release the very first single from the Heathrow Clubhouse, and the final edit for their first single ‘Free my Soul’ was completed live at the Avid edit suite on May 14th and released within 4 hours of finishing the last note.

Said Angus, ‘ Releasing our debut single from the Virgin Atlantic edit suite was great. It had everything we needed, and Free my Soul is an apt single to release from Heathrow - we are really proud of it.’

Free My Soul is available to download from iTunes now.

Many composers have produced their best work while waiting for buses, trains and planes. Paul Simon wrote “Homeward Bound” while waiting for a train in Widnes Station. Departure lounges are often one of the few places where artists have time to kill and can simply sit and think. Virgin’s flights to New York and Los Angeles have always been very popular with workers in the world wide entertainment business, and of course, our founder Sir Richard Branson started his career in the music business.

The new Avid suite is awesome, and Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse service was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G!

Louisa, so how did you use the Avid suite and why is it awesome? When did you use it? Do you have any connection to Virgin?

I really can't see the point of this. Typical Virgin spin.

This is a great idea, perhaps more for publicity than practicality. As a travelling musician I always have a laptop set up with me to write on the move. Even having somewhere to charge, let alone a midi keyboard and monitors would blow my mind! Love it.
